New Features
Compiz Fusion
Compiz Fusion [1] is installed but not enabled by default. To run it once, simply run compiz-manager from a command line. If you would like to have it run automatically when you log in, run the following command from a command line:
ln -s /usr/local/bin/compiz_start ~/.kde/Autostart/
This will place a shortcut to the command in your autostart folder. The compiz_start script includes a sleep command because otherwise it will not work correctly.
Note that Compiz Fusion is unstable, and may cause problems, which is why it is not enabled by default. If you have problems, contact Jason for help.
Screenlets, Cairo Dock, Avant-Windows-Navigator
These are all programs that require compositing (which is enabled) but not necessarily Compiz (which is not enabled by default). Screenlets [2] is similar to Mac OSX's widgets, while Cairo Dock [3](in French) and AWN [4] are similar to the dock in OSX. To run them, type the following at a command line:
screenlets-manager &
or
cairo-dock &
or
avant-window-navigator &
If you would like to run everytime you log in, simply leave them running and log out. It should automatically run them the next time you log in.
Changes
Menu
The default menu for KDE in SuSE has changed. It has been redesigned to be more usable and efficient. If you do not like it, simply right-click on the "K Menu" (the gecko in the bottom left corner) and choose "Switch to KDE Menu Style"
Math Software
Mathematica 6.0.0, Maple 11, and Matlab 7.5.0 (R2007b) have been installed on all computers. If you need an older version, please let Jason know and it can be installed.
Compilers
Java 1.6.0 and updated Intel compilers have been installed. You should not notice any changes from this.
Other Software
Most of the software packages included with SuSE have been updated to newer version, including Firefox, OpenOffice.org, GCC, etc...
